What REALLY Happened:
The Demonstration in Sacramento, CA
at Mayor Steinberg’s House
Sacramento, California, the capital of the state, has a population of 700,000 people. As of January 2021, however, the city had no shelters currently open to unhoused people, or even warming centers, for the thousands who live outside. One warming center had recently opened for fewer than 100 people, but it was only made available when the temperature dropped below freezing for three nights in a row.
On Tuesday, January 26, a devastating storm hit Sacramento with torrents of rain and winds over 50 miles per hour – bringing what the local paper called “A night of Horror”. That night, the City refused to open even that one warming center after repeated warnings and requests. Six homeless people died in the fury of the storm.
As reported in the local paper, the Sacramento Bee, the refusal to open even one warming center was deliberate cruelty widely condemned throughout the city: “Homeless activist Audrey Sarber said at least 100 homeless people were near the [warming center at] the downtown library that night – and many would have sought shelter inside had it been open.
“They couldn’t even move to unbundle their blankets from their faces,” Sarber said, close to tears as she recalled that horrifying night. “I offered them socks. Some of them said to save them for the next person. That was the thing that made me go home crying. That those people who have nothing were more concerned about the next person having something. They have nothing, and the city has millions.”
