Sunrise Movement calls out Texas governor over storm abandonment
Reposted with permission from Sunrise ATX, the Sunrise Movement hub based in Austin, TX. Sunrise is building an army of young people to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process.
On Sunday, [February 28] Sunrise Movement ATX gathered at Governor Abbott’s mansion [in Texas] to create a memorial for those who passed during the storm. Each piece of cloth represents a person who passed, a blanket that we wish we could have given them before Governor Abbott and others abandoned us to the storm.
Abbott failed to protect us from the climate crisis, promoting a deadly fossil fuel economy and selling us out alongside other leaders for privatization and destructive deregulation. He failed to ensure we were prepared for an extreme weather event like this. And now he’s failing to protect us in our moment of need. He isn’t going to do his job, so he doesn’t deserve to represent us.
We deserve a government that addresses our basic needs and protects all of us. Despite the lies Abbott and Fox News are spreading, that’s truly what the Green New Deal is all about. Now is the moment to deliver on immediate economic relief, invest in resilient infrastructure, ensure a social safety net, and halt the climate crisis once and for all. It is time for the Green New Deal.
To get there, we’ll have to build a movement. If you want to join that movement, you can start by joining our Good Jobs for All Launch Event on March 4th at 8:30pm ET.
